B. J. Beck retired from a career in business management to try her hand at writing. The first short story she ever sent out for consideration was bought by Villainous Press and will be published this summer. She recently teamed up with another family member to create the Brass Crab Books label, to learn about self-publishing as she continues to sell her work. Beck’s premiere fantasy novel, The Fields Where Soldiers Play, was released in May 2014 and is the first in The Mending Wars Trilogy. She will be reading excerpts from her book at LibertyCon, and can answer questions on self-publishing and starting an LLC. A book/publishing company launch is also planned for the weekend. Beck graduated from Minot State University with a straight-A average, earning four college degrees in technical fields. But, instead of putting that education to work, she ended up traveling around with her husband, a retired B-52 pilot, as a military spouse. While raising their two children, she found time to become a master scuba diver, earn a red belt in Tae Kwon Do, and turn her sewing skills into a successful costume design business. She also has several trophies for sport fencing, and in her late teens she won the Oklahoma state fencing championship (first in foil, second in epee). In addition to her reading panel, Beck will be on the brewing panel as a homebrew expert, and she will be helping with the judging of costumes. She has attended conventions since the age of 15, but this will be her very first LibertyCon.
